Replace your tires in Southern California when the tread depth drops below 4/32 of an inch, when you see sidewall cracks from sun exposure, or when the tires are more than six years old — even if tread looks fine.
The penny test still works
Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head facing down. If you can see all of his head, your tread is below 2/32" — legally worn out. Replace immediately.
Why SoCal tires age faster
Sun and heat dry out tire rubber. You'll see fine cracks on the sidewall, often called weather-checking. Once cracks are visible, the tire is structurally compromised, even if tread looks good.
The six-year rule
Every tire has a DOT date code (the last four digits of the DOT stamp on the sidewall — weeks and year). After six years, replace regardless of tread. Tire compounds break down internally.
What we'll tell you on a mobile service call
If you call us out for a flat repair and we see your tires are aged or worn, we'll show you the date code and the tread gauge so you can decide. We don't push replacements that aren't needed.
